deluge systems
Deluge systems are fixed fire extinguishing systems where water or water mixed with a foaming agent is used as the extinguishing agent.
The basic components of a sprinkler system are:
- an adequate water supply
- electric or diesel pump
- control and alarm station (electro-valve)
- supply and distribution pipework
- sprinkler nozzles
- Fire alarm and detection system
The principle of operation is to use a fire detection system which, by means of a fire control panel, triggers the electro-valve, activating the installation.
Deluge systems work on a similar principle to sprinkler systems. The difference is that in deluge systems nozzles are placed on the water distribution pipework. The nozzles do not have a shut-off, which means that the water is applied simultaneously to all parts of the area to be protected. Deluge systems are used for the protection of buildings, cooling of flammable objects wherever a rapid spread of fire can be expected, they are activated either automatically or manually.
Deluge systems can be divided into two groups depending on the purpose for which they are used:
- deluge systems for extinguishing fires
- deluge systems designed to protect endangered structures and technological equipment from excessive heat from radiant heat and from the spread of fire
